Research Scientist / Senior Scientist, Transport Emission Control For Clean Ice

We are now looking for a Research Scientist / Senior Scientist to join our Transport Emissions Control team on a fixed term contract starting in April 2024!

As a Research scientist / Senior scientist at VTT, you are able to make an impact on our customers and society. VTT works closely together with industry, often in interdisciplinary research groups. VTT has excellent research infrastructure and your work is supported with experienced researchers, engineers and technicians. We are also currently building new Clean energy pilot platform in VTT Bioruukki, where we continue the experimental work in new laboratories 2026 onwards.

In this position, you will have an essential role in Transport emission control research at VTT. You will increase VTT capabilities in experimental research for aftertreatment catalysts, other aftertreatment technologies and non-exhaust emissions. You will support ongoing research projects with your skills, participating development of capabilities, production of new knowledge, technology readiness level increase and IP.  Our team, Transport emission control, works on reduction methods of harmful emissions for on-road, non-road mobile machinery and marine sectors. For instance, aftertreatment systems and new sustainable fuels are in the focus. The team is also expanding to non-exhaust emission research with aim to analyse all the emissions of vehicles.

Your responsibilities as Research Scientist / Senior Scientist: 

• Development of experimental research capabilities for catalysts and novel exhaust aftertreatment solutions for sustainable fuels
• Development of capabilities in brake dust and tyre wear emissions experimental research
• Supporting project work with your skills
• Participating in planning and execution of experimental research
• Analysing of measurement data and developing of data analysis methods
• Producing new knowledge, technology readiness level increase and IP through experimental research
• Participating actively in dissemination with journal publications and conference presentations
• Participating in discussions with potential customers and collaborating with research organizations, as well as planning and applying of new projects.

Who we are looking for:

• You have a MSc. or PhD. in Engineering, Physical Sciences, Chemistry or a closely related field with strong connection to Transport emission control.
• You have experience in one or several:
  • Dynamometer testing of vehicles, engines, brakes or tires
  • Experimental measurement setups for exhaust emissions, vehicles, and engines
  • Measurement of aerosol particle emissions
  • Aftertreatment systems in on-road, non-road mobile machine or shipping sectors
  • Catalyst R&D
  • Non-thermal plasma technology
  • Internal combustion engine development for sustainable fuels
• Willingness to travel occasionally to customer or project locations, or conferences.
• You can conduct high quality experimental emission research, analyze measurement data and report your results scientifically, CFD- and other modelling skills are an asset but not required.
• You have excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
