OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

I. Background

The work of the section of Global Citizenship and Peace Education focuses on improving the relevance of education systems and addressing global challenges to peace, justice, human rights and democracy through education, with an approach that is holistic, gender- transformative, culturally sensitive, and human rights-based, central to fostering creative and sustainable societies.

II. Duties and requirements:

Under the authority of the Chief of Section of Global Citizenship and Peace Education (GCP) and the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist, focal point for hate speech, the contract Holder will contribute to the development and coordination of the Sector’s activities relating to global citizenship education, and more particularly on issues related to addressing antisemitism and racism through education. This includes:

  • Supporting the development of educational research, technical guidance and the implementation of capacity-building opportunities for education stakeholders on addressing antisemitism through education, with particular focus on the partnership with the European Commission and OSCE/ODIHR. This may include considerations pertaining to Holocaust remembrance & education as well as Holocaust denial & distortion.
  • In this context, contributing, in collaboration with the GCED team, to the identification of gaps in international and national policies, and to the development of new initiatives and partnerships to improve and strengthen UNESCO’s responses to the problem of antisemitism.
  • Supporting work related to addressing racism through education. This includes in particular follow-up on the development of guidance for textbook writers and curriculum developers and assisting in the development of a new programme to foster anti-racist approaches in education.
  • Supporting fund-raising, including the development of concept notes and project proposals.
  • Supporting communication (website, social media and other supports), outreach, advocacy, resource mobilization on all above-mentioned activities.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in education, social sciences, international relations, or related areas, with strong background on addressing contemporary forms of antisemitism and racism through education.

Work Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant professional experience, of which preferably 1 year acquired at the international level.

Skills/ Competencies

  • Previous professional experience in dealing with contemporary antisemitism, prejudice, and discrimination, preferably at an international level.
  • Excellent written and oral skills, ability to write concise and clear texts.
  • Proven skills in analysis, organization and coordination, especially in the coordination of events.
  • Ability to ensure the accuracy of documents and reports, through research, referencing sources and consultations, with particular attention to details.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with a variety of actors and work effectively and respectfully in a multicultural environment.
  • A strong sense of ethics, professional integrity, diplomacy, tact, and discretion.
  • Proven ability to work effectively under pressure, manage high workloads and tight deadlines, and act flexibly to adjust work schedules and priorities.
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Office).

Languages

  • Excellent knowledge of English and good knowledge of French.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Work Experience

  • Previous professional experience in dealing with contemporary antisemitism, prejudice and discrimination, preferable at an international level.
  • Experience in resource mobilization.
  • Experience in event coordination.

Languages

  • Knowledge of another official language of UNESCO (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish).
