Organizational Context

Job Purpose

This position will play a critical role in utilizing the strength of the IFRC’s membership of National Societies and help them better prepare for and develop skills in and out of emergencies. The Regional Membership Communications Coordinator will oversee a team in planning, engaging, mobilizing, and strengthening communication professionals in the Red Cross Red Crescent network. The position will oversee how we engage National Societies as leading humanitarian responders. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Regional Communications Manager, and in cooperation with the Headquarters’ Communications department in Geneva, the Membership Communications Coordinator is responsible for:

Developing and managing communication and engagement strategies with National Societies in Europe:

  • Overseeing and managing a team to develop stronger communication capacities with priority National Societies across Europe.
  • Integrating and coordinating communication priorities into Federation-wide planning with National Societies.
  • Identify and monitor KPI results, showcasing key successes in the region.
  • Work with the Membership Services department in integrating into their strategic planning.

Supporting National Societies to prepare for emergencies:

  • Working with National Societies to better prepare for emergencies, including having tools, skills, resources in place.
  • Together with the global and regional teams, support in strengthening emergency communications in Europe through training, development plans with National Societies, and developing emergency communication tools.
  • Coordinating and connecting with the network of National Societies during emergencies.
  • Support in surge deployments to further amplify and position the IFRC and National Societies in emergencies.

Fostering relationships and connections in the IFRC, between National Societies and external partnerships:

  • Identify opportunities for National Society capacity building, skill building and learning through innovative communication approaches.
  • Facilitate key partnerships between National Societies to foster cross learning and capacity strengthening.
  • Coordinate and lead on trainings and capacity building efforts in the region.
  • Provide support to increase the quality of internal communication and collaboration within IFRC and with the membership.
  • Regularly engage and build relationships with National Societies in the region.
  • Support and feed into the regional and global IFRC editorial calendar, working with NS on their comms needs to share on the newswire, slack and other channels.

Working with National Societies to demonstrate and position humanitarian collective impact in the region:

  • Plan for communication milestones that help NSs communicate and advocate to their publics (including donors, governments and other stakeholders). This includes data, upcoming trending humanitarian needs, stories/case studies, etc.
  • Coordinate global campaigns and other NS toolkits that support National Societies who are engaged on different humanitarian issues.
  • Support in RCRC Movement communication coordination (including for major events, emergencies, and positioning).

1.    Actively coordinating the achievement of the Federation Secretariat’s goals 
2.    Abide by and work in accordance with the Red Cross and Red Crescent principles
3.    Perform any other work-related duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the line manager

Education

Required:

  • University Degree in Journalism, Communications, International Relations or similar

 

Experience

  • At least 8 years of experience working in communications, journalism or similar field and experience managing a team.
  • Experience in managing communications issues in complex and delicate situations.
  • Experience in relationship management and coordination.
  • Experience in coordination and project management.
  • Red Cross and Red Crescent experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Languages

  • Strong knowledge of current affairs and opportunities for humanitarian diplomacy and positioning humanitarian issues.
  • English writing skills including proven experience in drafting people-centered communications content for a variety of communications channels.
  • Results-oriented with proven ability to prioritize and achieve results.
  • Presentation, public speaking and writing skills.
  • Excellent organizational, relationship building and coordination skills.

Languages
Fluent spoken and written English
Other spoken languages in Europe an asset

Comments: This is a national staff position open to Hungarian nationals and others who are legally eligible to work in Hungary. Candidates must be able to provide proof of their eligibility to work in Hungary.

Please note that the position is open to staff from National Societies too. Upon successful selection and hire, staff from National Societies will be contracted as Seconded Staff.
