At the Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Fundamental Electrochemistry (IEK-9), we perform research on highly relevant topics related to the energy transition. For example, we investigate new battery concepts and how we can turn the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) to the fuel of the future. The aim is to develop sustainable and cost-effective electrochemical systems with improved energy and power density, longer lifetime, and maximal safety. We are looking to recruit a
Postdoc – ML-Based Image Processing
Your Job:
The department “Theoretical Electrochemistry and Data Science” at IEK-9 plans to design and code a flexible, adaptive tool for digital Image Processing. Various experimental imaging techniques are routinely applied at IEK-9 to study electrocatalytic surfaces and phase boundaries. The huge amount of accumulated imaging data requires automatized image postprocessing to facilitate the efficient and reliable analysis and interpretation of different experimental imaging techniques, such as atomic force or electron microscopy as well as tomography. We intend to use different machine learning (ML) algorithms with a strong focus on neural networks (NN) to create a versatile Image Processing tool as well as to develop new, advanced ML-supported imaging techniques. Your tasks in this exciting assignment:
- You will develop and code the ML-based Image Processing tool together with colleagues both at the IEK-9 and at associated partner institutes
- In close collaboration and open exchange with experimental colleagues, you will identify requirements for the Image Processing and support the application in the experimental setup
- You will supervise project students, who will work on smaller sub-projects related to Image Processing
- You will summarize and publish project results both in publications as well as at scientific conferences
Your Profile:
- Master’s degree in physics, applied mathematics, data science, or theoretical / computational chemistry and a subsequent PhD degree
- Profound programming skills in python and its ML and NN modules
- Extensive background in ML, NN, and related deep learning methods, ideally with a focus on digital Image Processing
- Experience with experimental imaging techniques is preferable
- Experience in interdisciplinary projects and open-minded, flexible work ethics
- A motivated, tolerant attitude to supervise students responsibly; ideally some prior experience in supervision of students
- Fluent English skills both in speech and writing
Our Offer:
We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! We support you in your work with:
- 30 days of annual leave and provision for days off between public holidays and weekends (e.g. between Christmas and New Year)
- Flexible working hours and a full-time position with the option of slightly reduced working hours
- Flexible work (location) arrangements, e.g. remote work
- Exploration and preparation of next career opportunities supported by our Career Center & Postdoc Office (https://www.fz-juelich.de/en/career-center-postdoc-office)
- Comprehensive training courses and individual opportunities for personal and professional further development
- Extensive company health management
- Ideal conditions for balancing work and private life, as well as a family-friendly corporate policy
- Targeted services for international employees, e.g. through our International Advisory Service
In addition to exciting tasks and a collaborative working atmosphere in Jülich, we have a lot more to offer: https://go.fzj.de/benefits.
