Job description

Quantum technologies will enable breakthroughs in societal issues ranging from climate change to developing new materials and drugs at the molecular level, but current quantum computing engines are too small and need to be scaled up for such applications, while quantum sensors must be engineered to be used in practical applications outside a research lab. Working at the forefront of research on scalable quantum computing engines and quantum sensors at TU Delft, you will be part of an interdisciplinary team covering the fabrication and operation of qubits, electronic (cryo-CMOS) circuit design, micro-architecture, programming models, compilers, and simulator platforms.

We have various openings for Assistant and Associate Professors. Based on your vision and interests, you may focus on any topic among the wide range in our research roadmap. To attract funding for your research, you’ll build your network of industrial and public partners. You’ll also be teaching Bachelor and Master students in Quantum and non-quantum computing and supervising Master and PhD students. In addition, you’ll play an active role in our faculty’s committees and the scientific community.

At the Quantum & Computer Engineering department, you will join our 100-strong cohesive team of highly motivated professors and students. Ours is a supportive, internationally diverse and inclusive environment, where you’ll find an open, welcoming atmosphere. Being used to growing talent, we’ll give you all the training and coaching you need to evolve in your position. You’ll be working closely with your colleagues and the researchers of our partner QuTech. Our common drive? To invent, design, prototype and demonstrate the potential of disruptive technologies using the unique features of emerging devices, such as qubits, memristors, spintronics, and graphene.

Requirements

You thrive on conducting groundbreaking research and taking the lead in the field of quantum computing engines in the academic world. Leveraging your communication and networking skills, you’ll connect with colleagues and partners, helping us make our faculty and department stronger. And you enjoy teaching, coaching and interacting with students.

You also have:

  • A PhD in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or a related subject.
  • A research background and keen interest in Quantum computing and other emerging computing platforms, such as, but not limited to, quantum compilers, simulators and architectures, computing paradigms and accelerators, energy-efficient computing, and electronic circuit design. An excellent command of English.

If you feel this role would be a perfect match, but you cannot as yet tick all the boxes, we’d still really like to get to know you, as you can learn and grow on the job!

Conditions of employment

This position is offered as an Academic Career Track position (1.0 FTE). During the Academic Career Track, we expect you to grow toward an Associate Professor position within a maximum of eight years, for which a position will be available. With other Academic Career Track colleagues, you will participate in the Academic Career Track Development programme, where you are offered ample opportunities to develop yourself in the areas of Education, Research, Societal Impact & Innovation, and Leadership & Organisation. You will regularly discuss your development and results with senior staff based on a personalized development plan and performance criteria agreed upon at the start of your Academic Career Track. You will start with a temporary contract that will be converted to a permanent contract no later than 12 -18 months after a positive evaluation, based on continuous confidence in your development potential and fit in the organization.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme as part of the Academic Career Track Development programme.

TU Delft sets high standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years.

Challenge. Change. Impact!

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three scientific disciplines. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we all use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make completely sustainable and future-proof. At the same time, we are developing the chips and sensors of the future, whilst also setting the foundations for the software technologies to run on this new generation of equipment – which of course includes AI. Meanwhile we are pushing the limits of applied mathematics, for example mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. In other words: there is plenty of room at the faculty for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1000 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.
