About the Position

The Oslo School of Architecture and Design invites applications for the position of Associate Professor, with a special focus on Timber Architecture. The role is designed to enhance the school's educational and research capabilities within this specialization, while also advancing the overall academic community's strategic commitment to sustainable materials and building techniques.

We seek candidates that are broadly oriented and passionate about their work, with an academic background in Timber Architecture. Applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in the practice of architecture, augmented by considerable teaching experience.

Timber architecture is fundamental to the Nordic architectural tradition and deeply embedded within the academic and research frameworks of the institute. This position is linked to the Technology and Practice section, with a specific focus on practice-oriented architectural design in technologically interdisciplinary contexts. Since 2010, the group has led research and development initiatives focused on utilizing timber as the primary building material. These initiatives have ranged from an urban scale to detailed material studies and actual building projects that are integrated into studio courses at the master's level.

We seek an architect who can lead master levels courses as part of a larger research portfolio, but also participate in the teaching team for courses led by others. The applicant will be responsible for forming new academic networks and developing externally funded research projects that also recruit Ph.D. students to the field.

About the Applicant

We are looking for a dedicated and skilled architect with relevant experience in teaching and research within architectural design of buildings with timber as the primary material. The applicant should have experience with interdisciplinary collaboration and demonstrate the ability to initiate and lead research projects within the field, as well as experience in Ph.D. supervision A background in architectural practice is desirable but not mandatory. The role entails teaching and supervising students at both the master's and doctoral levels, along with active participation in relevant forums dedicated to the academic advancement of the school. Applicants will be assessed with a view to professorial competence on an academic basis, documented research, and R&D-related teaching practice. Employment decisions will be made following a comprehensive evaluation of qualifications and personal attributes taking into account the goals and needs of the Technology and Practice section at the Institute of Architecture.

Qualification Requirements and Personal Qualities

  • Master's degree in architecture
  • Ph.D. in the field, approved as equivalent to a Norwegian Ph.D.
  • Documented scientific results, peer-reviewed publications, international contributions, and ongoing research activity
  • Documented innovative R&D related to teaching practice within Timber Architecture
  • Documented relevant practical-pedagogical competence based on education and/or teaching and supervision
  • Experience with academic leadership, collaboration, and administration.
  • Experience with the development of and participation in research projects.
  • Experience in establishing interdisciplinary networks nationally and internationally.
  • Proficiency in academic English
  • It is a requirement that the applicant completes courses in Norwegian language training and achieves proficiency in the Norwegian language within a two-year period (courses facilitated by AHO)

The position is remunerated according to the State salary scale for code 1011 Associate Professor NOK 630,000 to 750,000.

For particularly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered. The positions are subject to the usual state employment conditions.

From the salary, a statutory deposit of 2% is made to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
