Mission and objectives

The Division For Inclusive Social Development (DISD) is part of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) of the United Nations Secretariat. The Division seeks to strengthen international cooperation for social development, particularly in the areas of poverty eradication, productive employment and decent work and the social inclusion of older persons, youth, family, persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, persons marginalized from society and development.The Division works in the context of the comprehensive and detailed framework of commitments and policies for action by Governments, intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations provided by the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development and Programme of Action of the World Summit for Social Development, with particular attention to the three core issues of poverty eradication, employment generation and social integration, in contributing to the creation of an international community that enables the building of secure, just, free and harmonious societies offering opportunities and higher standards of living for all. The Division’s work is vital for the social pillar of sustainable development.

Context

Database on "National policies and measures to safeguard social development and implement the 2030 Agenda in times of the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond":This database presents policies and measures that Member States have implemented to combat hunger and poverty during the COVID-19 pandemic and the recovery phase. This platform seeks to serve as a Knowledge Hub for national governments to share their experience, effective policies and measures, and innovative approaches, so that they can build on them to recover better and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goals 1 and 2, by 2030, with no one left behind.The information contained in the database has been collated mainly from Voluntary National Reviews, and the note prepared by the Secretariat as a background document for the “Emerging Issues” of the 60th session, titled "National policies and measures implemented by Member States to combat hunger and poverty in times of the coronavirus disease pandemic and beyond: challenges to get on track towards the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda", as well as other sources.

Task description

The Online Volunteers "Public Information Gathering and Research for a Knowledge Hub on National Policies during COVID-19 and Beyond to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" will:1. Organize, review, and include approximately 200 National Policies and measures in the Database of National Policies to address hunger and poverty during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.2. Conduct research on around 40 the Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) reports3. Identify and extract the National Policies mentioned in the Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) reports, and then add these Policies to the database.4. Learn about the mandate and activities of DISD/DESA.
