The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position on the Kuopio campus. The position will be filled for a two-year term from 1 March 2024 onwards (or as agreed) with the option to extend for an additional 1–2 years. Role and salary
As our new Postdoctoral Researcher, you will be working in the A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences at the Faculty of Health Sciences in the mitochondrial cardiomyopathies project, which is funded by the Research Council of Finland. The position is located in Kuopio, Finland.
Mitochondrial defects lead to severe cardiac disease in a subset of patients. Our aim is to identify underlying metabolic and stress pathways that dictate the outcome of the disease in the patients by utilizing Stem cell derived cardiac cell models. You will develop and utilize novel cardiac cell models to analyse metabolic defects and stress responses in patient material. In addition, the effects of candidate treatment strategies will be analysed.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- conducting research in accordance with your research proposal,
- participating in the preparation of research projects in your field,
- reporting and creating high-quality scientific publications,
- planning and conducting studies.
The position will be filled for a two-year term from 1 March 2024 onwards (or as agreed). The position will be filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to a specific project tasks. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.
The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities.
The salary comprises two components: a job-related salary element and a personal salary element. In this position, the job-related salary element is EUR 3,150.54 /month, based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff. The personal salary element can be a minimum of 6% and a maximum of 50% of the above-mentioned sum. Depending on the personal salary element, the salary will be approximately EUR 3,330 – 4,730 /month at the beginning of the employment relationship.

Requirements
- Education: A PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant field, such as Molecular Biology, Genetics, Cell Biology, Cardiac Biology, or a related discipline.
- Research experience: Demonstrated experience in research, preferably in the field of Stem cell models or cardiac biology, or a related area.
- Skills: Proficiency in cell culture techniques, molecular biology methods, and genetic manipulation tools (e.g., CRISPR) would be beneficial.
- Publications: A strong track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Communication: Excellent English communication skills, both written and oral.
