We are looking for the Institute for Neutron Physics and Reactor Technology (INR) as soon as possible limited up to December 31, 2027 for an

Engineer specializing in nuclear fusion technology (f/m/d)

Contributions to the work for the safety case of the European Fusion demon­stra­tion Power Plant (DEMO), as well as to a national project: “Regulation of Fusion Power Plants in Germany”, in particular to the following tasks that are being carried out at KIT:

  • Update of the Generic Site Safety Report (GSSR) regarding the safety-relevant description of the systems, performed accident analyses and available safety codes:
    • GSSR Vol. 2: Overview of Design and Safety Features: Work on system des­crip­tions and associated safety issues, functions and requirements.
    • GSSR Vol. 7: Analysis of accidental scenarios within design basis and design extension conditions: living deliverable updated annually based on the performed accidental events.
    • GSSR Vol. 10: Documentation of validation and verification of safety codes: living deliverable updated annually completing code description for safety.
    • Safety analyses for DEMO HCPB (Helium Cooled Pebble Blanket) blanket concept with numerical simulation of the thermal hydraulic performance.
  • Report on safety issues for the national project based on the EU DEMO devel­op­ment with published material for fusion perspective and regulation in Germany (legal as well as technical):
  • Status quo and gap analysis with regard to Nuclear Waste disposal
    • Fusion-specific radioactive waste identified in EU DEMO
    • Quantification of DEMO nuclear Waste from maintenance / decomm­issio­ning
    • Regulatory requirements for fusion-specific waste for classification, manage­ment and material recycling.
  • DEMO safety with regard to the current technical
    • Safety requirements
    • Hazard potential
    • Verification and validation of the simulation codes
  • The preparation of scientific and technical reports and their publication at national and international levels are an indispensable part of the work.

Personal qualification

  • University degree (Master) in the field of Nuclear (Fusion) engineering or a PhD degree
  • Experiences in Nuclear Fusion technology and reactor safety are preferred
  • Very good knowledge of PC and proficiency in Microsoft Word
  • Other software techniques, such as system code Matlab and LINUX are preferred
  • Very good language skills in spoken and written English and German
