  1. Job Purpose

To contribute to the Press's publishing programme in Humanities and Social Sciences by commissioning books in Business, Economics, and Law, and work with the Senior Commissioning Editor on research, review, and overall development of the list.

Expected to commission coursebooks and monographs in Business, Economics, and Law and develop the lists, meet individual syndicate and transmittal targets, and be accountable for the list on the whole, including all related admin processes.  

Other:

Reports to Senior Commissioning Editor.

  1. Principal Accountabilities

  Pre-commissioning and commissioning

  • Be aware of developments in the field and have general awareness of current affairs.
  • Assess BPFs, sample chapters, and manuscripts.
  • Identify reviewers and prepare material to be sent out, and ensure timely delivery of reviews.
  • Commission/acquire authors and prepare and circulate Syndicate Papers.
  • Prepare contracts for authors, editors, contributors, and series editors.
  • Undertake research for expanding author and reviewer base.
  • Market research and competitive analysis to determine areas in which we should have new work.

Work on contracted titles

  • Work closely with authors/editors/contributors/pre-press colleagues/others, answering queries and providing guidance as required for each project.
  • Undertake clearance reviews as required.
  • Provide content, layout, and style suggestions.
  • Undertake research on cover illustrations.
  • Contribute to marketing and promotional work including writing blurbs and negotiating appropriate material with author and marketing.

 

General administration

  • Maintain overall workflow.
  • Keep clear, appropriate, and up-to-date list-wide records and provide list-wide information as required.
  • Make or requisition appropriate payments, as/if required.
  • Ensure that relevant information on systems, including Centaur and SAP, is fully accurate and up to date.
  • Work as part of a team.
  • Attend external events as required, including relevant conferences and campus meetings, launches and discussions.

To carry out any other duties that may be reasonably expected of you by your immediate manager or a colleague within appropriate timelines and work hours.

To abide by all Press policies and procedures, as detailed in the contract of employment and the Staff Handbook, e.g. Code of ethics, anti-bribery and corruption, Health and Safety, e-mail and Internet use and standards of behaviour.

Working with the CE(s) and Head of Publishing. With strong emphasis on developing a market driven publishing programme, the job holder will also work closely with pre-press, sales, and marketing colleagues.
