ArchMAPP. Archaeological Mapping for Preventive Archaeology and Planning Policies.

In last decades, urban and rural areas changed profoundly because of the spread of urbanization and
the implementation of large infrastructural projects. However, these transformations have not been
accompanied by an adequate increase in knowledge of the archaeological heritage that should have
directed them. Therefore, the project proposes research activities on four case studies in southern Italy, where the above requirements appear more stringent: two cities with a long continuity ofoccupation (Brindisi/Brundisium and Lecce/Lupiae), and on two abandoned settlements in rural
areas that are particularly at risk (Masseria Vicentino/Mesochorum and St. Eleuterio/Aequum
Tuticum). The goal is to develop digital archaeological maps integrated into GIS as tools
immediately available for Archaeological Superintendence and Local Administrations during
heritage protection works.
